The Learning Centre Literacy Association, a non-profit organization based in West Edmonton (City of Edmonton Orange Hub) dedicated to adult literacy in Alberta, is currently seeking an ELL Instructor to join our team. Our mission is to engage people in community learning and literacy development, so they can make positive changes to themselves and their communities. To this end,

The Learning Centre offers free literacy programs for low-income and marginalized Edmontonian adults. The Instructor is responsible for facilitating classes. They are responsible for follow-up activities to ensure that participants reach their ultimate academic goals according to the program timetable. Working with the team, they will play a key role in achieving our mission and ensuring the success of our students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lesson planning activities based on adult learning principles in which content is relevant, practical, respectful, self-directed, strengths-based, builds on learners’ knowledge and experiences, and is oriented towards learners’ goals
  • Integrating Skills for Success into program delivery
  • Leading group-work and class discussions, and ensuring that learners feel that they have opportunities to have their voices heard
  • Assisting students individually through one-to-one meetings outside of class and providing feedback in a timely manner
  • Offering guidance to classroom volunteers and tutors
  • Working collaboratively alongside TLCLA Programs Coordinators to ensure standardization and continuity of course delivery, learner retention, and the collection of key metrics indicators for operational and reporting purposes
  • The instructor will work alongside students to develop reading, writing skills, and critical thinking skills. This includes supporting the development of communication, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability.
  • The instructor will encourage and support student involvement in all aspects of programming and Association activities. This will involve knowledge of community capacity-building.
  • The instructor will help to ensure that student participation and relationships among students, volunteers, and staff reflect the mission, vision, philosophy, and principles of the Association.

Other Responsibilities

  • Submitting brief written reports as required
  • Demonstrating patience and understanding when working with students
  • Adapting materials to meet each learner’s needs
  • Adapting to changes in the classroom environment and students needs
  • Being responsible for assessing students in order to create a learning plan for each student
  • Taking initiative to pursue independent training opportunities
  • Participating in TLCLA training events (as needed)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Related certification or degree from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Knowledge of Skills for Success and their application in literacy development
  • Understanding of community-oriented education and familiarity with Knowles’ Adult Learning
    Principles
  • Familiarity and aptitude in a/synchronous content development and delivery, as required under
    dynamic pandemic-related circumstances
  • Familiarity with, and experience in, digital/virtual classroom environments
  • Ability to administer and develop formative assessments to measure learner progress and gauge, monitor, and/or adapt learning objectives to sustain content relevance
  • Ability to work respectfully with people of various cultures and backgrounds
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex ideas in easily accessible terms to diverse audiences

Proficiency in French, Cree or other Indigenous, Spanish, Urdu and/or other languages is an asset

Contract Length
September 2023 to December 2023 (with a possibility for renewal). Part-time (negotiable upon selection of the successful candidate).

In-person Instruction

  • Application Open: Aug 11 th
  • Interviews: Aug 15 th -22 nd
  • Orientation: Sept 12th -15 th (2hrs on the chosen day.)
  • Classes Begin: Sept 18 th

Expected Contractor Remuneration Range
$35-40/instructional hour
