Employment Skills Programs

Workplace Literacy Program

Our employment skills programs focus on giving participants the skills and certifications necessary to succeed in employment, education and career advancement. The programs are intended to be stepping stones to long-term employment and reduced reliance on financial support programs.

Low literacy is a significant barrier to both employers and people seeking jobs. About 48% of Canadians are functionally illiterate (Statistics Canada). In May 2020, 1.8 million Canadians were unemployed due to COVID-19. About 38.9% of them had education levels equivalent to a high school diploma or less. Below is a graphic comparing poverty rates in Canada to the multitude of issues that create employment barriers.

The Centre’s employment skills programs are developed around the nine essential skills as outlined by the Government of Canada.

what exactly are the 9 skills for success?

The Centre previously offered the BESKY program which offered employment skills training for individuals ages 18-30.

BESKY ran for three years between 2017-2020, serving 11 cohorts and 120 participants in total. 80% of past program participants managed to gain long-term employment or successfully enrolled in continued education at the conclusion of the program. All participants earned at least one certificate through participating in the program.
