Position Summary
TLCLA is seeking a committed and experienced Adult Literacy Instructor to teach four in-person classes weekly (8hours):

  • Reading and Writing for Life Purposes (4 hours/week)
  • Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes (4 hours/week)

This contract position is ideal for an instructor who values community-based education, learner-centered pedagogy, and culturally respectful teaching practices.

About Us

The Learning Centre Literacy Association, a non-profit organization based in West Edmonton (City of Edmonton Orange Hub) dedicated to adult literacy in Alberta, is currently seeking an ELL Instructor for summer classes. Our mission is to engage people in community learning and literacy development, so they can make positive changes to themselves and their communities. To this end, The Learning Centre offers free literacy programs for low-income and marginalized Edmontonian adults. The Instructor is responsible for facilitating classes. They are responsible for follow-up activities to ensure that participants reach their learning goals according to the program timetable. Working with the team, they will play a key role in achieving our mission and ensuring the success of our students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate lessons based on adult learning principles that are relevant, practical, strengths-based, and aligned with learners’ goals.
  • Support learners in developing reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking skills for life, and/or academic success.
  • For the academic stream, guide learners in CAEC-related content including English, Language Arts and Social Studies
  • Use diverse teaching methods and adapt materials to learners’ levels and needs.
  • Encourage student voice through group work and class discussion.
  • Maintain respectful, inclusive classroom environments reflective of TLCLA’s mission and values.
  • Support and guide classroom volunteers and tutors.
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinators to ensure effective programming and meet required metrics.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit brief written reports.
  • Participate in TLCLA team training as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree or relevant certification in adult education or related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
  • Minimum 1 year of experience teaching adults, preferably in a community-based setting.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory (ies).
  • Experience with lesson planning, learner assessment, and adapting content.
  • Comfortable with Google Classroom or willingness to learn.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build respectful relationships with learners from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Additional language skills (e.g., French, Cree, Spanish, Urdu) are an asset.
  • Familiarity with Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the Luke & Freebody 4-Resources Model is an asset.

Duration of Contract

January 6, 2026 to May 19, 2026 (with a possibility for renewal).
