Are you looking for a meaningful way to be involved in your community? To share your knowledge and skills? To meet new people? We invite you to consider volunteering with our Association. Here are some ways you can get involved.
Tutors
Tutors work one-to-one with students or help with group learning. Most tutors come to a Learning Centre once a week for about two hours. Some may meet with one-to-one with students in other locations, such as a school or library.
We look for tutors who are interested in working with adult students and who want to learn with and about other people. Some of our tutors are retired teachers or are training to be teachers. But our tutors come from various walks of life.
Our coordinators and facilitators provide orientation, support and resources for tutors. We try to place you so that you can use and share the skills you feel confident about. Some of our most avid readers are not keen on tutoring math, and vice versa!
To apply to be a tutor:
- Decide which location suits you and check the schedule to see if it matches yours.
- Call and ask to speak with the Coordinator. The coordinator will ask you about your interests and availability and arrange a time to meet with you.
- You may fill in the form before you come to the meeting.
Other program volunteers
We also welcome volunteers as receptionists and to teach computer skills. And if you have other ideas about how you might help, give one of the Coordinators a call.
Board members
A Board of Directors governs The Learning Centre Literacy Association and provides direction for the Association’s work. Board members are elected at the Association’s Annual General Meeting. They serve a two year term and can be re-elected.
Board meetings are usually once a month from September to June, on Friday afternoons.
To find out more about being a Board member, contact the Association Coordinator.
