The Creative Connections project continued on February 23, when 15 TLCLA learners visited Edmonton Christian School Northeast’s art class to create sculptures with the students there. The participants started by talking about what they’ve learned during their time together, about literacy and about each other. Then they made sculptures that reflected their feelings about reading and literacy. Later, with the help of teacher Evelyn Martin, the group put their individual sculptures together to make a larger one built around a “mountain” made of books from both schools.

All the participants are looking forward to the final event: the release of the documentary and book about the project. The premiere is at the Art Gallery of Alberta on Thursday, May 25. Watch this site for more details!

On March 31, 120 people from Edmonton and several other Alberta communities gathered at Abbottsfield Mall for the second annual Never Ending Learning Conference. This conference, organized by adult learners for adult learners, featured Edmonton’s Poet Laureate, Anna Marie Sewell, as the keynote speaker. During her talk about the benefits of taking risks, Anna Marie demonstrated her point by reading poetry while standing on her head! Next came morning and afternoon workshops, with a fabulous lunch from Choices Catering in-between. The participants closed the conference with a Celebration of Learning, sponsored by ECALA. At the celebration, learners told their stories and highlighted the unique programming at their literacy centres. We were delighted to have Mayor Stephen Mandel as a guest and deeply appreciate his support.

It was great to see adult learners and tutors learning, networking, and supporting each other at the conference. We are profoundly grateful to those who made it possible. Thanks to our fellow Edmonton literacy organizations, our other community sponsors, and especially the conference planners: the Abbottsfield Ambassadors, students from the University of Alberta’s Community Service-Learning program, and other volunteers who pitched in!

On April 12, TLCLA had its Annual General Meeting. 34 learners, tutors, staff members, and friends of the Association met with the Board of Directors. We enjoyed a delicious lunch from Choices Catering before we got down to business. We reviewed the 2011 Annual Report (click here to download) and the 2011 Financial Statements (click here to download). Then we thanked our 2011-2012 Board of Directors and elected board members for 2012-2013. We’d like to welcome our new board members, Eileen Keogh and Frank van Veen. Frank and Eileen are both TLCLA volunteer tutors.

The Writer is TLCLA’s literary magazine, published twice each year. This December’s edition lets readers peek into the Creative Connections project, a collaboration between TLCLA and Edmonton Christian Schools. In the project, kids and adult learners share their writing and art with one another and create new work together. In this issue of The Writer, TLCLA students and staff wrote stories and poems about art loaned to us by the Northeast and West Edmonton Christian Schools.
