The Downtown Learning Centre was on the move in the fall of 2009. After 13 years in its present location within the building, the Centre moved downstairs into a new space to accommodate Boyle Street Community Services’ program expansion initiatives. The ‘new’ location was fully operational by early October and is entirely accommodating of the Center’s open space, tutor-driven and outreach learning philosophy.
The Downtown Learning Centre continued to reach out to the inner city adult learner population by continuing to offer such flexible programming options as computer instruction, art space, writing sessions at different times of day, including evenings. The ECALA funded program was extended into 2010 and has proved quiet successful in providing learning opportunities to adults who live with life situations that make it difficult to access regular learning programs.
A political education component was introduced at the Downtown Learning Centre in the fall of 2009 with the introduction of Writing for Social Change, a session facilitated by Daniel Johnson and the Humanities 101 course entitled “What I didn’t learn at school: Education & Society”. These sessions served to incorporate critical thinking into literacy skills development.
